The food in particular is very good quality, creative, fresh and healthy’ (CQC)
Residents are encouraged to involve themselves as much as possible in the preparation and cooking of all meals. Staff are available to provide all the necessary support and the kitchen is well equipped and fully accessible. All meals are provided, whether individuals choose to cook independently or not. Breakfast, lunch, (perhaps a packed lunch if at college) with a home cooked meal provided every evening which residents usually decide to enjoy sitting down to together.
‘Residents are able to decide how they live their lives in the same way as ordinary members of the community’ (Relative)
This consistent and structured staff support has resulted in all our residents involving themselves fully in everyday community living and enjoying a full and varied lifestyle. Everyone living at Hemmet House currently access the Independent Living Courses at SCOLA every day, some go to SCILL (Sutton Centre for Independent Living and Learning), most attend Freewheelers Drama, Media and Dance classes and almost everyone has set up voluntary work projects in the local community. These range from office work and furniture restoring to helping out at a children’s nursery or working on an access audit in Sutton town centre. In addition to these commitments residents are supported to go swimming every week, shopping, lunches out and of course there are group and individual trips to the pub, cinema, ten pin bowling, football, tennis, theatre – in fact staff support is available for whatever people are interested in doing, whenever they want to do it.
